WHAT WE TREAT

Sports & Activity-Related Injuries

You do not have to be a competitive athlete to have an activity-related injury. Yard work, gym training, running, youth sports, recreational activities and weekend projects can all produce musculoskeletal problems that interfere with movement.

You do not have to be a competitive athlete to have an activity-related injury

At Henschell Chiropractic, sports and activity injuries include more than organized competition. We see people who hurt themselves during youth sports, gym training, running, recreational activities, yard work, home projects and other physical tasks. Some injuries happen with one obvious movement or fall. Others build gradually through repeated use, a change in training volume or an activity the body is not yet prepared to tolerate.

Guided functional exercise for an active patient

Common activity-related complaints

Patients may come in with neck or upper-back pain, low-back pain, shoulder-area discomfort, hip or leg symptoms, muscle strains, joint stiffness, reduced range of motion, soreness with lifting or running, or a problem that keeps returning when they try the same activity. The goal of the evaluation is to understand what movement became painful and what physical demands the patient is trying to return to.

How we evaluate a sports or activity injury

We ask how the injury occurred, what the patient was doing when symptoms began, what movements reproduce the problem and whether there has been swelling, weakness, numbness, instability or loss of function. The examination may include range of motion, strength, orthopedic testing, neurologic screening when appropriate and functional movement relevant to the activity.

If significant trauma or the examination suggests a fracture or another condition that needs imaging, onsite digital X-ray is available when clinically appropriate. Some injuries require a different imaging study or referral rather than chiropractic treatment.

Lower-extremity assessment for activity-related symptoms

From symptom relief to return to activity

Reducing pain is only one part of recovery. As symptoms improve, functional rehabilitation can help rebuild mobility, stability, strength and confidence. The exercise plan is progressed according to the patient’s symptoms, physical demands and goals rather than giving every patient the same program.

MobilityRestore comfortable movement where restriction is limiting activity.
StabilityImprove control through the trunk, hips, shoulders or other involved areas.
StrengthBuild capacity for the loads the patient needs to tolerate.
Return to activityGradually reintroduce work, exercise, sport or recreation based on progress.

Youth sports and active families

Children and teenagers have different physical demands and may describe symptoms differently from adults. Dr. Alta Mahan’s focus on pediatric and family chiropractic care complements our treatment of active children and teens. Evaluation and care are adapted to age, development, symptoms and examination findings. Parents are included in the discussion so the plan is clear.

Activity injuries can overlap with work and everyday life

A shoulder problem that began in the gym may also affect lifting at work. Low-back pain from yard work may make prolonged driving difficult. Part of the Henschell workflow is documenting how the problem affects real function, not just the activity that started it. That helps guide rehabilitation toward the things the patient actually needs to do.

When an injury needs more than chiropractic care

Significant trauma, suspected fracture or dislocation, progressive weakness, severe swelling, inability to bear weight, major joint instability, fever, or rapidly worsening neurologic symptoms may require imaging, medical evaluation or specialist referral. The goal is to determine the appropriate next step, not simply begin treatment.
